Eisern! Welcome to Union Supporters America, our fan group for 1. FC Union supporters living in, or from, the United States (or, really anyone else who wants to join. We’re not particular!). Given our recent success on the field, it only makes sense to create this club now, in order to give new fans a place to build community and participate more fully in the wonderful traditions of Union Berlin.

The hope is that in doing so, this group can impart some of the history and pride that has proven such a powerful and positive influence in our own life. While much ink has been wasted on whether Union is an “alternative” club or not, it’s clear that some of its fundamental values–tradition, fairness, responsible management, humility, and real, unfiltered (even uncomfortable!) passion are sorely missing in the modern sports-entertainment complex.

The risk to Union, of course, is that it will be gentrified by globetrotting “eventis”–people who love consuming the merchandise, the “underdog” story, and the association with Union, but pay little attention to the actual workings of the club, much less the maintenance and continuation of tradition. We’re not looking for people who would sell naming rights to the Alte Försterei in order to buy flashy new players. Rather, we’re looking for people who, like club president Dirk Zingler, want the fan engagement and community Union offers to be considered “normal”, rather than alternative.
